So...he's really saying that being the top chef in Scotland is about as hard to achieve as being the best hooker in Baghdad? Not hard to do if there aren't any good ones?
The soon to be deported food critic had even harsher words..
Edinburgh-born Gill described Scotland as "unquestionably the worst country in Europe to eat out in - or the worst country that didn't once have a communist dictator".
Gill added: "This place is hotching [sic] with some of the best raw ingredients in the world, yet finding a scallop on a menu is like trying to go dogging in Riyadh.
"Scots die younger not just because of the cholesterol, but, in the end, because they can't face another dinner."
To be honest I am not really minded to. Obviously he's going for the maximum sound-bite so the comment is too exaggerated to usefuly engage with. On the other hand, having just necked down two Scotch mince pies, I have to say that our delicacies and national cuisine tend towards the, shall we say, robust.
Excellent meals can be had but the overall standard is pretty damn mediocre at best.
And before jwer starts rabitting on about haggis, I don't care what it is made of it tastes very good indeed. Look at it this way Americans take virtually the same ingredients and come up with Macdonalds, so no throwing stones please.
C: Blogger was constipated yesterday and posted the entry twice. Your comment was there, it was in the first post, and I just deleted the second one.
jwer: Really, I'm not sure McFood is as pure as you'd like to think. It's not the beef patties that worry me, it's the slurry they make of chickens to create nuggets that turns my stomach.
